Much like a rugby team (where it gets its name) training for the big game, scrum encourages teams to learn through experiences, self-organize while working on a problem, and reflect on their wins and losses to continuously improve. Everyone has a voice with agile. This never happened before at Starmark. They had department meetings once a month and discussed how that specific department could run better. Now, every meeting is a company-wide discussion about how the entire company can be better. Team members in different departments can in this way talk to each other to make the entire process smoother. Every morning each work stream gets together for about 10-15 minutes. A different person runs that meeting each day and everybody says what they accomplished yesterday, what they plan to accomplish today, and if there are any blockers- any collaborations that need to occur. Each person should spend no more than a minute.

The next big wave in learning is mobile. When a company makes their learning platform mobile, the send a message to their employees that learning can take place anywhere, at any time. Most employees want to learn on a mobile device and expect apps and websites to be optimized for their device. Mobile learning can incorporate other technologies such as social media, videos, and cloud computing to make the learning experience the best it can be on the mobile device. Some of the most effective learning is outside the usual realm of what we think of as learning. Most learning is informal. It happens all the time, from watching other people, exploring the world, and just talking to others about various topics. When companies capture the essence of informal learning and make learning a part of the everyday lives of employees, they are creating an agile learning culture. Since these meetings take only 15 minutes, it’s best to have the Daily Scrum standing up. This is to keep the urgency and energy level high throughout the session. Since what they’re discussing is right next to them, people don’t waste time and energy mentioning things or trying to remember what the sticky notes said. Since the material is right there, they can just point. Note that it is always better to use a physical task board. However, a digital task board can make the job just fine is no physical one is available.

In Scrum, teams are self-managed. However, it doesn’t mean they can manage themselves perfectly well without a Scrum Master. Hiring a skilled and experienced Scrum Master is essential for building a productive workflow of a Scrum team. But why? What does a Scrum Master do? In a nutshell, the Scrum Master makes sure that a development team sticks to Scrum, its principles, and practices. The Scrum Master manages the team’s workflow: organizes daily stand-up meetings and retrospectives;coaches the team members and removes impediments. Apart from these tasks, the Scrum Master also collaborates with the Product Owner and helps with product backlog management. Yet, the Scrum Master mustn’t become a boss who gives orders. Scrum teams should remain self-managed and the Scrum Master can interfere and make decisions only if team members can’t agree upon an issue.
